When should I hire a doula?

A birth doula can be hired anytime during pregnancy. Some people prefer to hire a doula right away, and some people decide right at the very end that a doula would be helpful.

Postpartum doulas can be hired during pregnancy (with a consultation) or after delivery.

I have a birth partner and a midwife, why do I need a doula?

A doula is there to be your birth advocate. Supporting a birthing person can be hard work, so sometimes the birth partner and doula switch off providing physical support (like during double hip squeezes!)

A doula provides nonmedical labor support while a midwife or OBGYN provides medical support.

What does a postpartum doula do?

The focus of a postpartum doula is on the physical and emotional recovery of the birthing person. A postpartum doula can also provide infant care as needed by the parents (diaper changes, overnight support, feeding, etc.). If something like housework is getting in the way of recovery, a doula can complete light housework as well.

Do I have to have a home birth to have a doula?

Doulas can provide care at a hospital, birth center, or home birth. All of these depend on your birthing wishes, and can look a little bit different for every family!

How much does a doula charge?

Doula costs can range depending on your area. At Wisteria Birth & Postpartum Care, the birth package starts at $800 and postpartum doula care is between $35-$45 an hour.

How do I become a doula?

There are many doula training companies. I am trained by DONA (Doulas of North America) as a birth doula, and certified by ProDoula in Postpartum and Infant Care. This is a great question to ask any doula, as the trainings can vary!
